The Connect Three Game can be used for many different grammar lessons (practice different verb tenses, themed vocabulary, etc.)
Just change the design on Canva (make your own copy of the file).

(For this particular Lesson, it is on page 5 and 6 of the file)
2 Options for Execution:
1. Print Worksheets - give 1 copy per student, but a pair of students will only use 1 sheet at a time. They can use the 2nd sheet for a revenge match, if time permits. Use red and blue pencils.
2. Share the file to students' tablets through LoiloNote. A pair of students will use 1 tablet, and they can play as many matches as they want. Use the pen function on the tablet.
Files included here:
1. Lesson Plan (in English and Japanese, for your JTE), in .doc and .pdf files, in case you need to edit.
2. Connect Three Boardgame file (pdf)
2 versions:
1. Easy - the boardgame contains verbs and just say the -ING form of the verb
2. Intermediate - Instruct students to use I/You/He/She/They + be verb (am/is/are), and the verb-ING plus additional words, to make a complete sentence.
Mechanics:
1. JTE and ALT to distribute the worksheet to students.
2. Review of Grammar: Present Continuous Verbs
JTE to review the verbs with students and how to change the verbs to Present Continuous tense.
Example:
eat --> eating
3. Connect 3 Game Demonstration
ALT and JTE will demonstrate the game rules to the class.
Rules:
1. 2 students will use 1 copy of the Connect 3 Board Game.
2. They play “Rock, Scissors, Paper” to find out who will start first.
3. The first player will pick 1 circle/square from anywhere in the Board Game, and say the Present Continuous form of the verb.
4. If he says the word correctly, he marks that circle with a blue pencil.
5. The second player will also do the same. The second player will use a red pencil.
6. They take turns in playing.
7. If they say the wrong word, they cannot mark the circle and they lose their turn.
8. Once a player has 3 circles of the same color in 1 straight line (horizontal, vertical or diagonal line), they connect the 3 circles, and score 1 point.
If a player marks a circle next to an existing 3-circle line, thereby making 4 circles of the same color in a straight line, he gets another point (because circle #2,3,4 make a different 3-circle line from circle #1,2,3). Another point is added if it is a 5-circle line.
9. The game is finished when all circles are taken. The person with the most points wins.
If some pairs finish quickly, they can re-set the file and play a 2nd match or revenge match.
Option B worksheet: Make full sentences before marking a circle.
*Example:
Fish --> I am fishing / He is fishing / They are fishing.
**JTE can choose to instruct students on which subject to use (I, He/She, They)
