Don't Get Caught

A card game for reviews

Don't Get Caught!

Format

Use this activity for reviewing units or just general question-asking

Put the class into groups (4 to 7 groups) unless it's a really small class

Give each group scrap paper to write answers on (they can answer in any format you like)

Decide turn order

How to play:

  • Groups take turns answering questions.
  • Once they correctly answer a question, they choose to either "hide" or "steal".
  • If they choose hide, they do not draw a card. If they chose steal, they draw a card without looking at it.
  • The deck they draw from has n+1 cards, n being the number of groups (or players).
  • Once all groups have answered, the cards are revealed. If any group drew the "Caught" card, they steal all points from groups that chose "steal" that round (the caught card must always be in the deck).
  • Groups that chose "hide" can then select a card without consequence.
  • However, if no caught card was drawn, they get no points that round.

Some variations:

  • To encourage more risky play, I usually double points for groups that chose "steal" if no caught card is drawn that round.
  • Instead of answering one at a time, you could instead have groups all answer the same question - groups race to write their answer, show it to you, and then choose their action if their answer was correct. Once all groups turn in their correct answers, finish the round as described above.
  • If you don't want to print and cut the cards in the file, you could play with a normal deck of playing cards instead (use a face card as the caught card).
