Activity

Summer vacation

An activity for students to write about what they did for their summer vacation.

This is made for Comet I for 1st years, but feel free to use this for any textbook/class! (I didn't use Comet examples so it can be adapted)

For this activity I started by showing my students the first episode of Phineas and Ferb for about the first 15 mins. (You will have to add this to slide 2, it is on youtube!) While not an accurate portrayal of American students during summer vacation, it is a fun way to see how the summer could be spent. (Attached below) I made a mini quiz just to make sure they were watching. I made sure there was a little bit of Japanese to help them, and I made sure the episode had Japanese subtitles.

The second half of the activity is having them draw a picture and write about their summer vacation using three simple sentences. Where they went, who they went with, and what they did. (presentation attached) I went through some examples and did my own on the board so they knew what to do. You and your JTE may need to help them with 'what did you do'. I wrote examples on the blackboard. (Please delete my examples if you want to use your own :) )

After, they came up and presented it to me. I gave them a speaking score from 1-5 (You don't have to give them a score, my JTE asked me to do so). I recommend that on the back of the worksheet you have a word search or crossword for students to do if they finish first. (For Comet I textbook users, I did make a warm up so feel free to use that one)

For me this took 45-50 minutes for a class of 40 students because of all the presentations.
