Taste / Food description Hint quiz

a three hint quiz using different adjectives for taste to guess the food item

This is intended as a warmup/ quick practice to confirm that students understand the new words we just studied while reviewing foods.

It was designed to use with the elementary school 'Here we go! 5' textbook but could be used with any source material really.

I start by practicing the flavors/taste words with the kids and confirming they understand.
Then I tell them to use their picture dictionary as a menu and that they have to guess what food I'm talking about.
I give the hints one by one until that have heard all 3. By the end a good amount of kids are already raising their hands and have an answer but more than one food item sometimes matches the same description so I always have them discuss what they think with the people around them for 30 seconds or so. Then I take a few answers, we do a drumroll and reveal the real answer.

I was good fun and a quick way to get used to new words while reviewing words from our last lesson.

Note : For fried chicken there are 4 hints. I used the hint 'hard' since it was in their textbook, but added crispy next to it so I could explain a word that isn't in their books, that they don't necessarily need to know. I usually give a few examples, and ask the students to give me some more before asking what they think it means in Japanese. However they should know generally what it means without any of this since it's become a borrowed word and often appears in advertising.

Cheers, Ali
