Detailed Explanation:
- Do a model dialogue with your JTE. ("What did you enjoy doing last night?" "I enjoyed listening to music!")
- Write "watching TV," "playing games," "reading books" and "listening to music" on the board.
- Say, "Today, let's see what's popular in this class!" Make a guess if your students would enjoy that.
- Check to make sure they remember the meaning of popular.
- Give them the worksheet.
- Give them a couple of minutes to do number 1 and 2 (writing their own answer).
- Explain numbers 3 and 4 (interviewing their friends) and give them about 5 minutes to do it. (Emphasize that they need to interview at least 3 boys and 3 girls.)
- After 5 minutes, have everyone sit down and do number 5, 6 and 7.
- Ask everyone, "What's popular?" Act really surprised and amazed by their results and tell them "great job!"
Variations:
- Of course, "I enjoyed watching TV" is correct English, but it isn't terribly natural. I chose "enjoy" because 1) it's in their textbooks, 2) my students want to use "enjoy" -- and often misuse it -- and 3) when my JTE used "enjoy" as a gerund example, the students quickly grasped the meaning and could use it correctly. That said, feel free to modify the worksheet with your own gerund phrase of this use of "enjoy" bothers you.
