Print this out and give each student a copy, and tape a copy to the staff room door as well (with permission from the principal, of course). When students come to the staff room and see you're the only one in there, they'll know what to say! :)
I made two different versions. The one on the second page has some Japanese translations on it.
LP:
- Pretend to be a student coming to the staff room and panicking when there's only the ALT inside
- Have the students repeat each phrase after you. For younger students, you'll have to explain "May I", "borrow", and "returning", but the Japanese is written on the handout, so it shouldn't be a problem.
- As you read a phrase and check that the students understand it, have a student volunteer to read that sentence in English with their own information.
- After you go over everything, act out the entire thing by pretending the classroom door is the door to the staffroom.
- Let students stand up and practice for 2 minutes.
- After the 2 minutes, ask for volunteers to come to the door and demonstrate in front of the class.
This is a funny idea. I think I'll use it in place of the small talk activity next week.
Thanks! Let me know how it goes. I taped it to the staff room door but haven't taught it in class yet, and some students already went for it! And the non-English teachers also have been encouraging the students to use it to my surprise. It's fun to watch haha.
this sounds fun! im at a school where a lot of teachers like English, I think both the teachers and students will get a kick out of this.
this is supremely useful and beautifully simple.
