Setsubun!
Updated - The animations in the intro cycle through automatically
I made this hastily in a free period this afternoon. I had intended just to start it, but the inspiration juices were flowing (coffee)! Can be used for a number of activities: translation races, asking questions to groups or other.
-Get the students to do the task of your choice.
-If the student gets the answer right they come up to press a button and try and throw a bean at the demon!
I put in three eventualities: the bean bounces off the demon and doesn`t bother him, you slap him with a sardine head branch (usually placed outside the home to ward off evil spirits) and a mountain of beans descend on the poor fool. I think I will use them as 1 point, 3 points and 5 points respectively, but you can do it how you like. Each slide has 6 unsuccessful beans, 3 fish slaps and 1 bean mountain (which ends the round).
This has been updated a few times now. I doubt I will change it any more this year. Many thanks to UonumaRobert for the intro section!
I hope you get some use out of it! Have a great day people!
It's super cute! I like it! Though, the kids in my school are pretty hard to impress sometimes, so I might suggest adding some sort of impact effect when the fish or beans hit the oni. I think it would feel more rewarding on top of the points, which can be rather ethereal to some students. They can participate to make the demon suffer!
Yeah, good point. I will try and come back to that. Though it may not be until Setsubun next year... Gotta make him suffer!
I changed it and added a whack cartoon drawing in when the fish hits. I want to spend more time on this at some stage and really make it so that you can see the pain in the oni`s eyes....
Thats a good impact image! And yeah the oni's eyes a definitely small enough I bet you could cover them with some crying eyes or something. I'm enjoying speed clicking through the numbers and watching all the fish and beans go flying!
It is very cute. Three suggestions if you rework it next year. For the 1 point have it bounce a little quickly away and off to the upper right rather than down. That way it looks like it’s bouncing harmlessly off the oni. For the hit that takes him down maybe make it a storm of beans rather than just one.
And if it were me, I’d add a scene at the beginning with a father putting on the oni mask and coming to the door. On setsubun it’s fun for kids to imagine driving off an oni but I’m pretty sure it’s the throwing the beans at their fathers that they really enjoy.
Excellent suggestions! This week is looking less busy than expected. I may get there before Thursday.
Final update, almost probably, maybe, we`ll see..... Thanks for all the input guys!
Cool, I've got a couple of elementary school lessons tomorrow. I'll use this as a review. I flipped the order. I'll put dad walking up to the house as the cold open before revealing the name and theme of the game.
Very sensible! I think I`ll use it the same... It builds it up nicely
Thank Jiggs, this went very well today at my small elementary school.
Thank you for the great PowerPoint! I tried it with my junior high school kids, and they absolutely loved the "bean mountain" animation!
I am glad it worked well for you guys (it did for me too)!
I loved the story at the beginning. I enjoyed playing it by myself, lol. It's a shame I'll have to wait until next year to try it with students :(
You've inspired me to look at some ways I can make something culturally relevant ^-^
I agree! As you can see from the above comments that was all Mr Robert...
Ah, shucks although I think it was your interesting sound choices that really sold it with my students. A suggestion for the start. Darken the picture and add snow. I ended up doing that. Dad is coming home from work in winter after all. Looking forward to sitting down and popping open a beer after the Setsubun stuff is done.
A hit once again this year. I added a penalty option, a bigger demon showing up to support the dad for minus points. Great fun as a race and speak. The slap always gets a laugh, every time it happens.
