I created this quiz game for my first year students to practice/review "want to", "try to", and "need to" in their first class back from winter break. In this activity, I gave students ample time to explain their answer choices and awarded points not just on matching answers but if I could agree with their answer reasoning.
Divide students into groups of 4-5 and keep points on the board (with the help of the JTEs), or have everyone answer individually to keep social distancing rules.
Level 1 students are given a sentence and need to choose between "need to", "want to", and "try to" which best fits. I have chosen answers that I thought were best and gave teams 2 points for matching my answer. I gave groups 1 point if they could convince me (using Japanese if necessary) why they think their answer is better than mine. My JTE knew the sentences and could provide a translation if necessary (omitting the answer, obviously).
Level 2 students are given a picture to understand context then given a scrambled sentence. Groups get 2 points for correct sentences and the fastest hand raised can have a chance to win 1 point for their team by giving a Japanese translation. I give students 1:30 to answer the question.
Level 3 students are given a picture to understand context then asked to write their own sentence using "want to", "need to" or "try to". I give students 3 minutes to make a group sentence. I award 1 point for (correct) "want to" sentences and 2 points for (correct) "need to" or "try to" sentences.
This group quiz game was perfect for the first class back from break to make a fun atmosphere while also reviewing and getting students back on track to study further. I created a condensed version on a worksheet using the same levels mentioned above. I hope it's useful!
