A custom game of Snakes and Ladders I made to practice overall grammar and understanding. The files include: a blank board, and a board for each jr. high grade. The questions are based on the New Horizons textbooks but they can also be applied more broadly.
Materials: Game board, dice, player markers (I had my students use their erasers)
Instructions:
1. Break the students into groups of 3 or 4. The bigger the group, the more time the game will take.
2. Give each group one game board, one die, and the appropriate amount of player pieces if necessary
3. All players start with their pieces on the start square.
4. Players play rock-paper-scissors to decide who goes first.
5. The player rolls the die, and advances that many squares forward.
6. The student answers the question of the square they land on. If they can't answer it, they have to go backwards a space (they don't have to answer that question).
7. If they land on the bottom of a ladder, advance to the top of the ladder. If they land on the head of a snake, go backwards to the end of the tail. Answer the question of whatever square you land on.
8. Play until one or all of the group reaches the finish square.
If you have more time, you can have them play again, switch group members, or switch boards.
My students had fun with this game, and I was able to do it for the whole 50 minute class. It's a good way to synthesize reading, comprehension, speaking, and grammar points.
