Black Box

A fun activity in which students give hints to a student who is touching an unidentified object that everyone else knows.

This is a fun one. Make a box that has a hole in the top or the sides and cut-out one side. By doing this, a student can put their hand inside the box without seeing what's inside, but everyone else can see what they're holding. (See the attached picture). This works great for Let's Try Unit 8 "What's this?" Have the student touch the object. Have the other students ask "What's this?" If the student doesn't get it right away, you can have the other students can give hints related to color, shapes, size, etc. When the student finally gets it, you can have them say "I got it! It's a/an 〜."

You could also have the guessing student ask "Is it a/an〜?"

This works great as a review for vocabulary you studied up until Unit 8. You can also use it to introduce 文房具 stationary and classroom items in Let's Try 2 Unit 5. I typically choose one student from each group to close their eyes and let the other group members choose an item from a basket of classroom items which they want the student to guess.

Here is a link to where I got this attached picture. The description is in Japanese.

This is also good in a Halloween themed class. Have flashcards like 'pumpkin', 'zombie eye', 'witch's hair', 'monster slime', 'spider eggs' etc. Put them on the blackboard. Then have some things that would have a similar shape or feel to those things and put them in the box.

what kinds of items do you put in the box for the students to feel/ guess?

Also how many rounds of guessing did you go through and how did you decide which students are the ones that get to come up and feel the items?
