Karuta English Listening Activity

Listening game inspired by the Japanese card game, Karuta. Uses a graded reading telling a story about Greenland.

Instructions:
Students sit facing each other in pairs with cards (24) laid out between them (half facing towards each student). Each card has an English word on it taken from the graded reading. They are given 3~5 minutes to memorise the locations of the cards before the game begins. The teacher reads the story slowly and whenever a student hears one of the words spoken they swipe the card away as quickly as possible, saying the name of the card out loud. At the end of the story the student with the most cards is the winner.

Recently went to hang out at the Karuta club at my school and thought it would be fun to adapt it to an English activity. Can easily be repeated with others graded reading materials or done on a larger scale with a longer story depending on the level of your students.

This is awesome! You could adapt this to any story! I think you could even do it in elementary school. For the younger kids, you could add pictures and have the students grab cards as you read the story. Thanks for sharing!

This is a great idea! I'm going to try using it with a holiday story in my Thanksgiving lesson today!
