Christmas Bouzu Mekuri Card Game

Based on the card game Bouzu Mekuri but with Christmas images

The classic Bouzu Mekuri game is used with Hyakunin Isshu Karuta cards. The deck of Yomifuda cards is placed facedown in the middle of a group of players (3-6 players is probably best). Each player takes turns drawing a card from the deck. If the person on the card is a man, they place it in the discard pile and the play goes to the next player. If the card is a woman, the player wins all the cards currently in the discard pile. If the card is a bouzu (monk), then that player loses all of their cards to the discard pile.

In this version, the cards contain Christmas images. If you draw a candy cane, gingerbread man, cake, or present, you treat it as you would a man card and place it into the discard pile. If you pull a Santa card, you win all of the cards in the discard pile. If you pull a Dark Santa card, then you lose all of your cards to the discard pile. You can have the students announce what is on the cards as they play to practice using Christmas vocabulary.

I made this for the holidays and haven't tried it out yet, but my ES kids love the traditional Bouzu Mekuri game. Since I haven't tried it yet, you might want to play around with the card ratios and figure out what works best.
It's very simple to learn and the constant exchange of cards keeps the game exciting because you never know who will win. I hope you enjoy! :)
