This is a fun and short activity that you can play more than one time with a group of students. I played this with my first year SHS students.
Materials I've included:
Page 1: the handout that is passed to the students. It has the instructions on them but please feel free to reiterate or show an example.
Page 2: the individual slips with numbers that are for the students who are playing first.
Page 3: the answer key if you need it, but I don't think it's necessary if you're having the students self-check.
Prep:
Just cut out the slips before class to save time and make sure you make a few so that you can play the game more than once.
How to Play:
Goal: Successfully pass on the series of numbers correctly from the first player to the last player.
Every single number from 0 to 9 has a word associated with it.
Students are required to say the WORDS to their fellow classmates to pass the code along.
(Optional: Go over these words before the game so they know how it sounds from a native speaker and have them repeat after you for practice.)
Many of these words have words that sound similar (such as grass and glass).
Instructions:
First, gather students into groups of 5 or 6 (more should be okay as well) OR have them play in their rows.
(The students in my classes are sat in rows of 6 to 7, so we don't have to move around.)
Then, pass one of the slips of paper with the correct numbers to the first person in the row. They will have to tell the person behind them the series of numbers through the associated words on the worksheet.
Repeat until everyone has had a turn.
Students can either go to the first player to check, or you can have kids just read out the numbers they wrote at the end and compare it to the person in the front.
If you want to repeat the activity, you can have the students switch seats or go from back to front. Also, provide them with a different set of numbers.
Feel free to tweak it as you like or do it for different words, such as b & v, f & h, etc...
