Trashketball (Review Game)

Teams take turns choosing questions that everyone answers. If the choosing team is correct, they can shoot the "trashketball" for bonus points from a +1 or +3 point line!

Long time listener, first time caller here!

Trashketball is a pretty popular game in the US, so you can find dozens of alternate rulesets if you google around for it. Most trashketball games are played verbally, but my low level kids do much better if they can see the questions. So I quickly made a simple Google Slides presentation to go with it before class!

MATERIALS:

  • One basket/hoop/trashcan (I used a small plastic container and put on the whiteboard with a magnet).
  • Some trashketballs (wadded up pieces of paper).
  • White boards, markers, and erases for all of your teams.

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Set up your +1 and +3 line markers (papers, tape, or anything can be used as a line marker). +1 should be decently easy to make, +3 should be very difficult to make (like basically across the room difficult).
  • Make groups (the fewer there are, the more chances each group gets to throw the trashketballs)!
  • Have the groups take turns choosing the next question.
  • EVERYONE answers the question using their whiteboards, and everyone holds them up at the same time to answer.
  • If the group that chose is correct, they get +2 points and a chance to throw the trashketball for +1 or +3 bonus (they are not risking the original +2 points).
  • If the groups that didn't choose are correct, they get +1 point. This keeps everyone engaged, answering, and reviewing rather than waiting around.

GUIDE TO THE SLIDES:

  • Clicking on a number will take you to a question. Press any button to make the answer appear. Press the basketball to go back to the main page. Google Slides doesn't have any way to show which questions have been answered so I write the numbers on the whiteboard behind me and mark them off myself for students. My school PCs don't have Powerpoint, unfortunately!
  • The black shapes on the left allow you to give students a category. In the version I uploaded, they denote which lesson the questions in that line came from!
  • I'm leaving my questions up as an example, you can make any kind of questions you prefer for your own reviews!

ALTERNATE VERSION - GRUDGEBALL

You can also play grudgeball, which changes it from a "get points" game to an "attack the other teams" game. In this version, each time starts with 20 pts and instead of getting points with correct answers, they get the ability to attack other teams for X points. The trashketball throws are for getting bonus points to attack with. Non-choosing teams who are correct can instead heal +1, if you like, but I recommend making the attack point values higher in that case because otherwise all teams will remain really healthy.

NOTES

I played this at my lower level SHS that is pretty small. The class size is 20 students! I'm sure it would still be fun in a larger class too, though! Basically any class size you'd already play Typhoon/Jeopardy with!

I love the idea. I want to try it with two baskets and the groups split into two teams!

This is such a good idea! I remember playing this game during lunchtime at school! Very smart of you to turn it into review! Thanks for making it!

Thank you for such a thorough and detailed explanation of the game and rules. This is great!

Would it be possible to convert the game to Powerpoint? Unfortunately, my school blocks GoogleDocs. If not then I understand.
