Activity

Snoopy Weather and Clothes (slides and Sugoroku)

A game for elementary or special needs students to help learn the weather and what clothes to wear! Snoopy themed for fun.

(This is my first activity posted here so sorry if I don't explain myself enough)

There are two sections of this lesson that can be seperated. Once the initial slideshow has been covered, I keep the Sugoroku as a time-filler activity.

This is a lesson I made for my JHS special needs students. They have a range of abilities- some students can't talk too much, so I included cards for them so they can still join in. They love Snoopy in the class, so obviously he had to help. My class is small as well, usually 4-7 students.

You will need:
-time to cut out the flashcards and clothes. They are a bit delicate so it takes a little bit. If you print out the clothing page and the board game page the same size (I printed them A3) then the clothes line-up to the snoopy in the middle of the game!
-Dice ( My class is only up to 7 students so I use one group and one d6, but if you have a larger class and more groups you’ll need more)
-Tv/projector for slideshow

First
Give out flashcards of the weather to each student

Slideshow.
The slideshow consists of 6 small activities.

  1. The slides start with simple explanations of the weather. I get the students to say it out loud in English or hold up the correct card.

2.Next the students identify the weather in the photographs, again by calling out or holding up their cards.

Here I give out the cutouts of the clothing. They are delicate so it's good to glue them on card/ laminate if you can.

3.I explain that if it's snowy, snoopy will want a hat, scarf, and gloves- so on for the other weathers.
4. Snoopy is a fashion disaster and wearing a mix of clothes, can the students tell me what he’s got on?
5. Oh no, Snoopy has fallen asleep outside! What clothes shall we dress him in for the weather? Students again hold up/ call out 'sunglasses!'
6. The final two slides are a listening activity, I say a pathway (e.g snowy, sunglasses, rainy) and the students shout out the correct letter it falls on. You can go a mix of fast and slow, and the last slide really gets some of the students excited! I use this activity in all my special needs classes and it gets them listening. If a student doesn't want to speak, I ask them to come up to the tv and point to the correct answer.

Sugoroku

Collect the clothes cut out from the students. If it's a small class put them all together, if not they can go into groups.
Put the game in the center of the table with the clothes cutouts next to it. Get students to use their erasers as markers and janken for who goes first.

It's a simple game, if the student lands on an item block then they have to say the name of the item! If they land on a 'dress Snoopy' block they have to dress Snoopy.

That's it! I usually give a sticker to the winner. The students tend to get a bit free with what they dress Snoopy in, but he's a fashion icon so I don't argue.

Enjoy!
