Activity

Auction Game (Editable) Micro

An auction game to help students practice numbers.

Directions;

Teacher splits the class into 6 groups.
Teacher clicks on an item and starts the biding game.
Ex: Item 1 (A bicycle).
When the teacher clicks on the “Item 1” button, a picture of a bicycle is going to pop up.
While the picture is still opened, students can discuss how much they want to bid on that item.
Let’s say that the teacher starts the biding at 1 dollar.
Group 1, says: 5 dollars, group 4 says 20 dollars, group 2 says 35 dollars etc... (you can use yen to make it easier)
The item goes to the highest bidder.
Let’s assume that group 6 has the highest bid at 300 dollars.
Teacher says: SOLD! (just a suggestion, you could get a small kitchen meat hammer from the dollar store to use it as a gavel just for the fun of it).

Then the teacher clicks on the picture of the bike to reveal the price.
The actual price of the bike is 500 dollars. (then the teacher clicks on the 500 button, to turn the button off and to go back to the group page, and the item will be marked as sold).
Then the teacher clicks on the Group 6 “label button” and a simple calculator is going to appear. Then the teacher deducts 300 dollar from their total amount for the amount they bid, and adds 500 dollars for the price of the item. Ex: 10,000 – 300(bid) = 9,700. 9,700+500(item) = 10,200 dollars.
Play until all the items are sold.
The group that has the highest amount of money by the end of the game is the winner.

Editing tips;

At the beginning page every group starts with 10,000 dollars. But you can change the amount you are going to give to each group by writting the amount on sheet 1.
On sheet 1, you can also easily change the prices of each item.

If you want to change the pictures of the items you have to open UserForms2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26 and 28 and change the pictures on the CommandButtons.

Warning: I have just finished developing this program, so I’ve never tried this game in class before. I have no idea how well it’s going to work.
If you try it, please give us some feedback on how the game went and on how we could improve it.

      Did this activity to review numbers with sixth graders on a day where my JTE was absent and needed to fill the class with something. For the first time ever, the most troublesome kid in the school who always acts like English will be the death of him went to the principal and admitted that English class was fun after having done this activity. Seriously great job on this. Great idea and great execution. One thing that I'd say about the activity is that the kids have no concept of a dollars value so it can be a little extra challenging in that regard, but overall they were able to catch on quick. Thank you!!

      @gyaretto, Wow I'm so glad to hear that, and thanks for the feedback, I think you have a great point. I'll leave the dollars one for now but I will include one using yen as well. Thanks. Cheers!
