This activity utilizes the restaurant ordering dialouge from New Horizon 1 p. 116 but with an added twist. This restaurant is set in the world of Spy Family or James Bond (which ever you are more familiar with) and the students are Loid Forger / 007. The secret police are aware that there is a spy somewhere in the restaurant but they are not sure who it is. The students goal is to go undetected by ordering properly. If you order incorrectly you may raise suspicions of being a foriegner (intelligence officer) and be arrested by the secret police for spying.
Before begining the dialogue, I hand out the menus (attached below) for the "world restaurant". This menu contains many exotic foods not usually seen in Japan so I made Power Point slides with pictures (also attached below) to go with it. I tell the students that they can each order several menu items worth up to 1000 yen, so circle the menu items that look good as I go the through the slides.
Now comes the actual dialogue portion. Have the students put their tables together in groups of four as if they were dinning at a restaraunt. The ALT will act as the waiter / waitress and go around each table taking everyone's orders as show on p. 116. If anyone messes up ordering, the ALT will call over the secret police (the JTE) through their chest radio and the secret police will arrest that certain diner and escort him / her out of the classroom. The particular class I did this with found the getting arrested aspect of it hilarious so I used it pretty liberally. If your kids are shy and you think they might get embarrased, you can take out this part or only do it with certain kids.
If you have a large class this may take a while but the goal is to get everyone to place their orders with you without arousing the suspicion of the secret police. In bigger classes you could speed things up by having the JTE also be a waiter / waitress. Although this is not a presentation in the traditonal sense, it is designed to help build public speaking skills as the whole class will be listening to someone as they go through the dialogue with the ALT.
The power point / menu attached below are pretty basic but feel free to experiment with some spy family / James Bond imaging of your own.
Enjoy!
