Target language: I want to go to the (pool), I want to eat (watermelon), I want to (go fishing, try diving)
Target words: beach, pool, swimming, watermelon, shaved ice, ice cream, go swimming, go fishing, go snorkeling, try diving, try butterfly stroke
additional words: he, she
Materials: beach and pool picture cards for students’ choice
Goal: Say what you want to do at the beach or pool in English
I. Warm up:
II. Small Talk
JTE and AET will tell each other that they want to go to the beach/pool because it’s hot.
AET: It’s hot today. I want to go to the beach. How about you?
JTE: I want to go to the pool.
AET: That’s fun! What do you want to do there?
JTE: I want to try diving and butterfly. How about you?
AET: I want to go swimming, fishing, and snorkeling. I also want to eat watermelon at the beach. How about you? What do you want to eat?
JTE: I want to eat shaved ice and somen.
JTE asks the students in Japanese what they understood.
III. Practice: Demonstration
Drill the pictures. Start with beach and pool. Tell students where you want to go, model the sentence, and let them repeat: I want to go to the beach. How about you? Students will repeat the sentence and tell the class their choice.
Show other flashcards and ask students what they are: swimming, watermelon, shaved ice, ice cream, go swimming, go fishing, go snorkeling, try diving, try butterfly stroke
Ask the students what they want to do to the beach/pool. Use the target sentences:
I want to (eat/go/try)
IV. Practice: Worksheet
Writing: JTE explains the worksheet. Students circle the things they want to go to and do. If students want to do or eat other things, they can write it on the worksheet too. They may write in Japanese. JTE will help them say it in English.
After the worksheet, each student will share where they want to go and what they want to do.
V. Final Activity: Guessing Game
JTE/AET collect the worksheet and quiz the class who the student is by giving a hint from the worksheet.
Example: He wants to go to the pool. He wants to eat somen. He wants to try diving.
