Classroom Hint Quiz (Template)

Photo-based guessing game to practice writing and school vocabulary! Great for Elementary or low Junior High School students—and SpED kids love it too!

ESL School Places Writing Game 🏫

I have played this both in ES and JHS and all classes really like it! I usually ask my VP for the school's master key to take photos and I show them the chapter in the book. I've never had an issue with getting photos of the Principal's Office, but I've provided a long list of rooms you can change on the template just in case!

🎒 Prep

  1. Choose 18 rooms or locations around the school. (I will include an optional checklist PDF for you)
  2. Take 3 photos per room:

    • Hint 1: Extreme close-up
    • Hint 2: Not-so-close photo
    • Reveal Slide: Wide angle photo of room
  3. Insert your images on the PowerPoint slides as shown in the PREVIEW Classroom Hint Quiz photo.

🕹️ How to Play

  1. Break class into teams and hand out whiteboards.
  2. Tell students they can use their books to check spelling!
  3. A team picks a letter, which links to the Hint 1 slide for a room.
    • Hint 1: Extreme close-up photo
  4. Press the spacebar to reveal Hint 2 and start a 1-minute timer.
  5. Teams have 1 minute to write their guess on the whiteboard.
  6. After 1 minute, have teams hold up their whiteboards.
  7. Click to the next slide to reveal the room/floor number.
  8. Award points and return to the selection slide for the next round!

🏆 Points System

  • Elementary (ES):

    • 1 point for Japanese name
    • 2 points for English name
  • Junior High (JHS):

    • 1 point for English name
    • Bonus: 1 point for floor number

📋 Rules Slides

I made 1 ES rules slide and 1 JHS rules slide. The only major difference is the allocation of points.
To show/hide the correct rules slide to students:

- In PowerPoint, click the “Slideshow” tab > “Unhide slide” to reveal the ES Rules slide.

Google Slides Or PowerPoint

  • For those who don't have PowerPoint on their computers but have access to Google at school.:

I have been trying to learn to make my PowerPoint Templates on Google Slides to be accessible by more teachers who might not have PPTX at school. I am very new to this;
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1N888EIcVlYXm6y2FJ_0XqzN2d61Wd8k8iJGC0vteeOU/edit?usp=sharing

Open the link > File > Make a copy > Entire Presentation

This version is a simple click-through. It doesn't have the automatic 1 minute timers or the clickable letter-magnets. If you want those features, unfortunately those only available on the PowerPoint version below.

Happy teaching,

Aw shucks! This seems like such a cool game but I can’t for the life of me seem to edit it.

@Jamrock Sensei Oh no! Do you get an error message? I just downloaded it on a new school computer and got it to work. Some suggestions I can offer are 1) make sure you are opening in PowerPoint the software (not PowerPoint the Web-browser). 2) click "enable editing" in Powerpoint 3) If it is an issue with a font, just click "remove restrictive font"

Let me know if you are still having issues with this!

@CarpenterBee I tried it on a different Pc and it worked like you said! Thank you so much!
