MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Immigration worksheet
- Passport: To make the passport booklet, fold the paper into fours. Make sure to fill in the JHS name and date on the passport before you print it out.
- Immigration card
- VISA stamp stickers: To make the stickers, copy and paste the visa stamps into a word document and print it out in color if you can. Then, cut each one out and put a double-sided tape on the back to make the stickers.
DETAILED EXPLANATION:
Give an immigration card to each student. Teach students the grammar point and make sure they understand all the questions.Then give a passport to each student. Make sure girls get the girl passport and boys get the boy passport. Then students will fill in the blanks on the passport together as a class. Tell students that they can make up the information (name, age, city, and birthday).
Review the 3 main questions with the students. What is the purpose of your visit? How long are you going to stay? Where are you going to stay?
Do an example with the JTE. The ALT is the Immigration Official and the JTE is the traveler. See Total English 2nd yr textbook page 23 or use the following dialogue.
- ALT:Next, passport please.
- JTE:Here you are/go.
- ALT:What is the purpose of your visit?
- JTE:Sightseeing (Business, Travel, Visit…)
- ALT:How long are you going to stay?
- JTE:About 1 year (about 1 month, 10 days, 2 weeks…)
- ALT:Where are you going to stay?
- JTE:At my friend’s house (hotel, motel..)
- ALT:Enjoy your time. (stamp the passport & return it to the traveler)
- JTE:Thank you.
Give students a few minutes to practice the dialogue & then encourage students to go to the ALT & try to pass immigration. The ALT (Immigration Official) will ask students 3 questions (What is the purpose of your visit? How long are you going to stay? Where are you going to stay?) and students will answer the best they know how. Teachers should encourage students to answer in complete sentences. Then ALT will put a stamp sticker on the students’ passport.
Students will then go to the JTE and become the Immigration Official. JTE will be the traveler and students will ask JTE the questions.
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
It is best to divide this lesson into 2 classes.For the first class, teach students the grammar points and have them fill out the immigration card. Then the next class, students will fill out the passport and do the activity.
