Review game I made for the end of the 2nd semester. This can be modified to fit any age/level or be used as a warm up, but the activity below was made for 3rd grade students (elementary school)
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Dice, at least 1 for every 4 person group
- A projector, or some way to quickly display questions
Basically, students get into groups of 4. Every group gets one die. Janken to see who goes first, then go clockwise.
Students roll the die. Whatever number they get is the question they have to ask the friend next to them. Once they successfully ask/answer, they pass the die on to the next person. They keep doing this until time is up.
After practicing a few times, I recommend "leveling up" the game. For example, students have to put their heads down as soon as everyone asks/answers, and whichever group is fastest is the winner of that round. Or setting a timer. Whoever has the dice when the time is up is the loser of that round - kinda like hot potato.
Attached is a Powerpoint with some questions corresponding to the Let's Try! 1 textbook - "What ___ do you like?", "How many?", and "What do you want?"
I have it set up so that we review one type of question for the first 3 rounds, and then if/when they get used to those questions, moving on to a more difficult version that has a variety of questions.
PURPOSE/BENEFIT OF THIS REVIEW GAME:
- Students are asking and answering questions on their own
- Unlike group-based games, every student gets the chance to participate multiple times in a small window of time
- Students who are struggling can be supported by their peers
- Having students in groups makes them easier to manage, even when they're playing independently
THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR:
- Some groups might be made up entirely of students who don't know what to do, so I recommend demonstrating the game and reviewing the questions to ask BEFORE they start playing
- Dice can be thrown, lol
Lemme know what you think :)
