This functions basically the same as mssamansa's"Trick or Treat" but with some minor adjustments. Here are their instructions edited to fit these PPTs:
PREP:
Connect your computer/tablet to your classroom display, mark out a place on the board to keep track of points
HOW TO PLAY:
Divide students into groups of 5-6 and have them draw straws to determine play order
Teams take turns choosing a number from the home screen. They then have 30 seconds to answer the question. If they get the question right, they earn points. HOWEVER--some questions lead to a "Naughty or Nice" option. On this screen the students can decide if they want to be "nice" (their team gets 3 points and they choose another team to get 3 points) or "naughty" (challenge question or other mystery option).
If they fail to answer in time I will let the other groups raise their hands and then choose either the first one I see or the team with the least points.
There are roughly 10 naughty or nice options hidden throughout the game. Half of these lead to challenge questions, which are all multiple choice Christmas trivia. The other half lead to minigames which are as follows:
The Grinch Steals Christmas: all teams halve their points (I found this less demoralizing than everyone losing all their points)
Snowball Fight: play janken with another team, winner steals 3 points
Santa's Sack: +6 points
POWERPOINT INSTRUCTIONS:
Click the number on the home screen to take you to the corresponding question
After students have answered, click anywhere to reveal the right answer
Click the ? icon to reveal the points OR Naughty or Nice
In the case of Naughty or Nice: click the happy, normal Santa icon to reveal the points, or the evil, scary Santa icon to reveal the challenge question/mystery option
Click the home icon to return to the home screen.
NOTES:
There are a fair number of review questions for grammar, but I also included a lot of easy Christmas trivia questions throughout the ppt as well. This lets some students who aren't as good at English still have a shot at getting some points. As for the information I included as questions, I present a ppt before we start the game that has some basic Christmas information. This ppt plus the game usually will take up an entire 50 minute class.
WARNING:
Some of the slides may be blank because they had my personal information/pictures on them, so make sure to change those. Also one or two slides may present strangely so make sure and have a test run on your own before you play.
Great work on this, clean and simple presentation. I would love to try this with my 2nd years.
