Vocabulary Speed Review

Digital flashcard warmup PowerPoint.

The following is a Vocabulary Speed Review inspired and created using the ideas and resources provided by CarpenterBee. They have a long list of other Speed Reviews here on ALTopedia, however they stopped teaching in ES so will not be making more. Thanks to the instructions and template they provided, I made a new one for Let's Try! 2 - Unit 8 - This is my favorite place.

Below are the original comments and instructions from CarpenterBee. Please see their original post for more Vocabulary Speed Reviews, a blank template, and detailed instructions for making your own.

I’ve used these types of PPTX flashcards in Korea for my middle school textbooks. The first time I tried this, I made the mistake of clicking through Rounds 2-4 manually, which got confusing fast. Learn from my mistake! The key feature I love about these flashcards is the auto-transition/auto-timing between slides. It keeps the class on pace and gives me the opportunity to walk around more to monitor pronunciation.

Kids really get into it, and by the end, 90% seem to walk away knowing all the new vocabulary. Even co-teachers are impressed!

While the estimated time is up to 15 minutes, this is assuming you’re introducing 30 new vocab words and need extra time in Round 1 for review. In practice, most of these reviews cover fewer terms.

📝 How to Use:

🎮 Start the PPTX

Click to start the presentation.

🔢 Round 1:

Click to move to the next slide.
Have the students guess the English vocab word based on the Japanese translation and picture. Then, say the word aloud and have the kids repeat it.

⏱️ Round 2:

This round is auto-timed, so do NOT click to the next slide!
Have the students say the English vocab word as it appears. Keep going until you hit the Round 3 slide.

🔄 Round 3:

This round is also auto-timed.
The vocab slides are now shuffled. Have the students say the words as they appear on the screen.

🔍 Round 4:

Auto-timed again – don’t click to the next slide!
The slides are shuffled again, and now only pictures are shown. Have the students guess and say the words as they appear.

🗺️ Tips for Success:
Keep it under 30 vocab terms: If you’re making your own, I recommend keeping it under 30 terms, as it can drag on otherwise.

Stay on pace: The auto-timing feature really helps to keep the pace of the lesson and ensures you can interact with the students more.

Check pronunciation: Walk around as the class goes through the rounds to monitor pronunciation and correct mistakes.
