Special thanks to mitchkat1. I shamelessly used your concept and design to make this activity. Thank you again.
I changed the currency to JPY because this was what we practiced 2 or 3 units ago.
BEFORE the lesson:
① Print the word document "Artwork" and choose the option "Print on Both Sides" or 両面印刷 in Japanese. The equivalent point of each artwork should be printed on the back. Do not show this in advance at all costs.
② Print the word document "Coins for the auction" and make sure you have enough copies for the number of groups you're planning to divide the class into and some extra ones. My game testers liked how big the coins are but please feel free to adjust the size.
③ Click through the PPT to check the timing of each item and animation.
Slide 1: Title page
Slide 2: Explain how the auction works and the twist that they can get points for every winning bid but put emphasis on spending their coins wisely otherwise they'll end up with no money to bid on the rest of the sentences/artwork. Also, they have to bid at least once every single round.
Slide 3: Explain that each team will have 1,000円 each in coins to spend in the auction.
Slide 4: If their team manages to get 5 points from the artwork they won, their team can get extra 500円 coins.
Slide 5: The team with the highest number of points will be the winner of the game. In the event that there are multiple winners, the team with the most amount of money left is the winner.
Slides 6-8: Example of how to bid. To reveal the point(s) of each artwork/sentence, simply click on the いらすとや character or in the later rounds, the paintings. Please practice the timing beforehand.
Slides 9-21: Bid against each other until one team wins an artwork/sentence.
When I played this with some students during break time, some of them got really excited and spent all their money right away. Unfortunately, the points accumulated weren't enough for them to get the additional 500円 so I did the loan system. They gave me back half of the cards (including the points) they earned so far in exchange for another 400円. I'm not sure if I'd include that system in the actual class because that's such a gambling scenario T.T
Please suggest other ways to handle that situation.
I haven't tried this in the actual classes yet but it definitely works in small groups. I'll update this once the lessons are done.
