Basic Setup
Divide the class into two teams. Start each team with 1000 points on the board. Pick "starting leaders" for each team. Starting with these leaders, students will take turns choosing questions from the item box selection screen.
(I decided to name the teams "Mario" and Luigi." But you can choose any teams names. You can also print out visuals of each character for fun.)
As students answer questions, have the leader change to give other students a chance to answer.
The leader is allowed to walk around and talk with their team to find the answer, but they must be the one to answer.
Students have a timer in the top right of each question slide; when time runs out, it's a "chance" for another team to answer.
Selection screen and more
The students choose boxes by saying the corresponding letter associated with the box they want. After the students choose the box, the question screen will show up. After the students answer the question, click once to reveal the answer. Mario will drive onto the screen. Click anywhere to advance to the "Item Box" screen.
On the item box screen, students will choose whether their team will "take" the box for themselves, or "pass" it to the other team. Once the box is opened, an item with a point total will appear. Add or subtract these points from the team that received the box.
Special Blue Shell Item
The blue shell can subtract or add points based on the teams' current point totals. If the team that opened the item box is losing, they gain 700 points. If the team is winning, they lose 700 points. If it's currently a tie, both teams get 700 points.
The blue shell function changes when there are more than two teams. The answering team can choose to gain 700 or make the current winning team lose 700.
Be sure to click on the item box to open it. Also make sure to click on the item to return to the selection screen.
When you finish the game or run out of time for class. Click the "Star" icon on the selection screen to go to the victory screen.
I tried to make a well-designed game for the kids! They really love it! I bought Mario stickers as a prize for the winners. Please enjoy!
Update!
Some JTEs wanted to play the game with more than two teams. To do this, simply allow teams to choose which team to pass the box to.
Interesting. I've never seen the 'pass or take' variation on the bomb game.
Thank you! Sorry about the large file size. It's because of the embedded audio files. I didn't know about the bomb game when I made this actually. I just checked your profile, and it looks fun though!
Not a lot you can do about audio files with powerpoint. They really want everybody using WAV files no matter how much better mp3 is. I add RiffWAVs to my mp3 files to trick powerpoint but it can be finicky. I've seen these games called bomb games, typhoon games and grid games. I hadn't thought of using the take or pass idea. I might play around with for a card game.
Will totally use this. Thanks!
Thank you! This is great and I am certain my JHS students will love it. They've already played a variation of this but to have it Mario Kart-themed will be extra exciting:)
