Activity

Will you Help Me?

Students write a script for a determined scenario and do a roleplay in front of their class.

In this activity, my JTE explained the request grammar point to the students beforehand, but in any case, you have the option to demonstrate with your JTE with a small dialogue with any of the scenarios. So, to get started this is what you do:

-Split the class up into pairs, although there may be some cases where there are 3 to a group (that's fine too.).

-Go around and reveal a set of cards or strips of paper that you have written the name of each scenario on. MAKE SURE THE STUDENTS DON'T SEE THE NAMES.

-Allow them to draw one card or strip of paper. The reasoning for this is so that it is totally randomized what scenario each pair gets.

-Explain to the students that they have to write a script based on the scenario they received. They can refer to the key phrases under each scenario and of course add any additional vocabulary or dialogue they want to. Explain to them that its completely okay to use their dictionary. Of course, I have also included Japanese translation to this specific instruction so that its easier for them to understand what to do.

-After about 10-15 minutes, ask them to practice with their partner and of course they will roleplay their scenario in front of the class.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
-Paper strips/cards used to list each scenario on.

FILES ATTACHED:
-I have included a PowerPoint that will give your students a sick backdrop to the scenario they are roleplaying ;)
-Word Document, please feel free to add any changes you see fit or add any scenarios you might find interesting.
-PDF

When I did this activity, it was funny seeing all the different ways my students came up with to roleplay their scenario. It was a pretty fun class. I hope you like it!

This is great. I've done 'make a skit' RP type activities a lot and the students can get really creative. I like the idea of background slides to add flavor. I've done it for making plans in different weather and I think it does inspire the students to be in the moment more.

My students don't do well with "prepare the speech" activities bc they get sidetracked or don't practice or extra nervous bc prep was so long. However, these activities are good, so the twist I take is give them about 5 minutes to practice then have them stand up and do presentation with a completely different partner of their choice. This way they can pick someone they are comfortable with, and everyone is on the same playing field of organic speech and no script to try and memorize.
