GOPS (Card Game)

GOPS (Game of Pure Strategy) is a really simple game that has an element of strategy to it. It's a really great game to play to help beginners become comfortable with pronouncing new vocabulary!

GOPS is a really fun classic points-based card game that is usually played with 2 players. This version has been modified such that you can play with up to 6 players. The rules have been simplified too! Use this activity to help students get used to saying new vocabulary, phrases or grammar structures!

Materials: Around the Town Cards (and other cards in the Let's Play With Cards series of decks)
Players: 2~6
Target Language: Numbers; Vocabulary; Phrases; Grammar Points
Lesson Stage: Warm-Up; Practice
Turn-Based: No
Recommended Level: Beginner

Break your class up into smaller groups and give each group a single deck.

Shuffle the cards
1. Make a pile of 13 cards in the middle of the desk (or floor).
2. Deal out all of the rest of the cards between the players. Players CAN look at their own cards.
3. To start gameplay, the dealer should turn over the first card on the center deck, placing it beside the deck. This card is the prize. It's worth it's face-value in points.
4. All players will choose one card from their hand--SAYING THE TARGET LANGUAGE IN THEIR HEADS--and place it face down in front of them.
5. When all players have placed their card face down, they will turn them over SIMULTANEOUSLY.
6. The players should look for the card with the highest value, and say the target language OUT LOUD. The first person to say it wins the PRIZE and the cards that they places are put into a discard pile on the side. (If more than one student says it at the same time, you can either have them play rock-scissors-paper, OR let the person who said the language and placed the higher numbered card down win the prize.)
7. If there is two or more of the same card, then no one wins the prize and the cards that they placed are put into a discard pile.
8. Someone should flip another card from the top of the center pile and add it to the PRIZE (if the prize hasn't been won yet). The next person who wins will collect BOTH PRIZE CARDS which will add to their total points.
9. The game continues until either you stop the game or the center pile runs out. (If you want to let them continue, then they can simply shuffle the discard pile and use it as the new prize pile)
10. At the end of the game all players should add up their own prize cards and the winner is the player who wins the most points.

Here is a link to the general rules for the original game (with video)! You should be able to clearly see how it's been adapted.
