HANGMAN! - Clouds Version: Past Simple Tense

Guess the letters correctly to save the hanging man! This activity focuses on regular verbs. Students will guess the letters in order to complete the sentences. Made for New Horizon 1 Page 103.

In this activity there are no hints and the kids will have to guess the letters to complete the sentences on the blank lines. Each wrong letter guessed will cause a balloon to fly away.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED: Tablet/PC and TV (in classroom)

The link below takes you to a site called wordwall, where if you create an account you'll be able to edit the activity easily if you choose to do so.

There are two ways to play the game:
1. Like a kahoot, where you share the QR code with the students and they join by adding their name (this is the setting that I have in place with the leaderboard function).
2. Disable the leaderboard function and you will be able to play the game as a whole class. Connect your PC/tablet to the TV and have the students guess the letters and you input them. (This option usually gets the kids a bit rowdy)

There are many other activities available on the site and similar to kahoot there are also themes you can choose from that are free. I highly recommend you try it out.

PS: In order to share your activity to the students you will need to make it public. If you fiddle around with the site it'll be easy to figure out.

Due to concerns about the original hangman style being inappropriate for teaching I edited this so that it's ok to use anywhere.

Hangman Not an Appropriate Classroom Game- I would avoid doing this activity as it can be very disturbing for students and staff at times, as it resembles suicide in Japan, however a great alternative would be the parachute game please refer to ALT wiki for more information on this https://www.altwiki.net/parachute-game

Agreed. Definitely don't do the traditional Hangman game in schools. There are infinite variations that would be suitable and just as fun.

Oh thanks for letting me know. There's actually other themes on the site which are easy to change so you don't have to use the original hangman style. I personally didn't use it, I changed themes at the last minute. I'll make sure to update the link to a different theme. Thanks again.

This is a great game! Thanks for sharing! To play devil's advocate with some of the above comments on how hangman isn't appropriate, although I often play snowman instead, my JTE loves hangman (hanging the man and all) so I don't think we need to be so harsh here in the comments. I agree it's good to be cautious and kindly redirect when we should, but I don't think any one of us are going into a classroom purposely trying to trigger our students/teachers (and if we are, then we shouldn't be ALTs). And especially not the poster of this resource! Thanks for sharing AbbyALT :)
