Escape Game

Your class is trapped and you need to put your minds together and escape.

I created this game because my JTE asked me to make an activity involving directions. I am not sure if someone has made a similar activity, so I do not want to claim that this idea is entirely mine. :D

There are 3 versions: Haunted Forest (easy), Haunted House (average), Zombie Hotel (difficult). The objective of the game is to escape by telling the teacher which direction they would want to go.

Both my Elementary and Middle Grade students have enjoyed this. I hope this game will be of use to anyone who would decide to use this in their lesson.

I usually use the Forest and House versions at my elementary schools while I use the Hotel version in my middle school.

The objective of the game is to escape the haunted place within the given time limit.

The rules are pretty simple.

  1. Give the class 3 lives.
  2. Tell the students that they need to work together as a class.
  3. Set a time limit. I usually give them 15 minutes to finish the whole game, but sometimes my JTE would let me use the whole period.
  4. Ask the students one by one in which direction they would like to go (turn left, turn right, or go straight).
  5. Make sure they answer in a complete sentence. Example: I want to turn left. I will go straight.
  6. If they encounter the ghost, they lose a life. If they lose all three lives, they lose the game. Of course, it is in your discretion if you want to give them extra lives to continue. I usually ask my JTE. :D
  7. They win if they get to the last slide with "Success" or "Safe" written on it.

For the hotel version, I included the powerpoint explaining the additional rules. I usually ask them to use "I would like to... " or "I have decided to...".

NOTE: You can tell your students that if they do not speak in a complete sentence or if they speak in 日本語 that you would dock a life. However, please speak with your JTE about how strict you should be with this rule. It, of course, depends on the level of the class.

I hope you and your students will have fun with this. :)

UPDATE: It is easier for students to respawn if they use a revive card. Just click on the room name at the YOU DIED slide.
