My JTE wanted the students to practice ordering from a restaurant, not a fast food chain that they go to all the time. So I made 6 different menus that students can order from and as a special bonus challenge I added a menu I brought from the U.S. that they could order from. I let the students hold the physical menu but I also posted photos on the slides. That might not adapt well for you though, so printing it out might be good or finding a real menu online. Students really enjoyed me showing photos of the real restaurant.

My class was around 25-30 students and I did notice that sometimes students were bored at their desks, so I recommend making more menus for smaller groups if possible. I used canva to make the menus so it's fairly easy, just use an already made template. I printed out the menus and laminated them, printed the signs, the example conversation, the checklist, and gave them dice (students were very excited about this).

The powerpoint has the checklist, example conversation, and restaurant namecards.

First I reviewed the conversation example with them, "What would you like?" and also practiced the food vocabulary on the menus with them (call and repeat). After that I explained the rules of the game (ref https://www.altopedia.net/activities/2802-let-s-order-some-food for rules, also included in the slides). I'm not sure if I'm bad at explaining things or it's just a bit too complicated but my JTE did have to help translate so they understood the rules. I added to the checklist the special challenge to come talk to me and order from my real menu (obviously a lot of the English is too complicated so I asked the students to pick one meal and one side, and I helped with pronunciation). Fastest group to finish their checklist won stickers that I brought from the US.

Overall it was a very successful activity. Students said it was the best one yet!
