ALT Quest Speaking Practice Cards

Printable cards to incentivize students to interact with their ALT outside of class time.

These are some cards that I have been trying out with students to varying success depending on the class and school. I teach Elementary 3-6年生, and I noticed that some students are shy when it comes to speaking with their ALTs after the bell rings. To promote these interactions, I've started giving out "Diego Quest" cards.

I recommend handing these out at the start of the year while explaining the premise and specific challenges to the whole class. The prizes can really be whatever you want depending on the class and their interest. Nice stickers are always a go-to.

Basic rules I usually stick to:

  • The cards must be completed in English (except for the Japanese quest).
  • Limit one quest per day (This prevents students from completing the whole card immediately. Can be upped to 2 a day, sepending on how frequently you see that class.)

It also helps to have a special stamp that the students can't replicate to avoid them trying to scam you.

Anything in the rules or on the cards can obviously be tweaked and adjusted to your needs! The point of these cards is to facilitate interaction, so anything to make the cards more appealing or aproachable to the students is a great idea! That being said, I would appreciate any feedback, as I am still trying to get the most out of the cards myself!
The first file has Japanese on the cards to help the kids remember, but if your students are more confident in their reading ability, feel free to use the full English version!

Apologies if it's a pain to edit. I had to get creative to get past some wonky formatting decisions Word was forcing on me.

Happy questing!
