Conversation Practice

An activity to get students practicing conversations in a more natural way.

This was an activity for my highest level 3rd years. The topic for this worksheet specifically was about your favorite memory, but we have done this many times following using different conversation starters. They are given time to write out their ideas in Japanese and then in English, but they are encouraged to not write out full sentences or rehearse too much. We rotate all the seats and have them with new partners every 5 minutes or so. They ask each other questions about their memory and discuss without focusing too much on making mistakes. Conversations in the real world do not follow a script, so we wanted to give them practice on creating sentences on the fly to get their message across.

The JTE and I go around and ask the students these questions and other questions that maybe follow the conversation. Truthfully, it is one of my favorite activities I get to do with this class because I learn so much about them and their interests.
