SPACE WAR
This is based on my new template for SPACE WAR.
It has been modified to be played as a row based game for my classes that aren't currently allowed to play in groups. Two rows equal a team so generally classes will have three teams. If you are allowed to make traditional groups I don't suggest using this activity. There are much better activities that can be used instead.
It is a variation on battle for Japan. It lacks the tactical fun of battle for Japan to make it a bit less wild.
I bring one six sided die for each row. I generally give them in small boxes and tell the students rolls must be made in the boxes.
On the demonstration screen you click on the sun to show the key words and the example answers. The glowing sun is the hyperlink to the next screen.
On the main battle screen you click on the arrow box to see keywords and example answers.
First round the first row of students have the boxes. They see the keyword and make their sentences. I have them speak the sentence first rather than wait to write it. They can either answer in order or raise their hands to answer. Every student gets a chance to answer. Once they answer they can roll their die. If they roll a 4,5 or 6 they can take a planet that has no controller. You can either select their planets for them or let the students select the planets. You click on the planet banner until the correct team figure appears. Once everyone is done you can click on the arrow again to go to the example answer. After that the students pass the die box to the student behind them and you go onto the next key words. At this point for the die rolling if a planet already has a team controlling it then a 4, 5 or 6 is also necessary to steal it.
There is a writing sheet. I suggest everyone write their answers even when it isn't their turn. You can have them write their answers after showing example answer. Depending on time I wait til after the activity for writing or ditch it all together. If everyone is focused and responding quickly I don't want to intrupt the flow.
After completing the 12 keywords, count which team has the most planets. Then click on the sun to go to the victory screen. If you click on the winning team character a victory song and animation will play.
SPACE RACE
This is a basic 'janken game' played in pairs. The pair does Janken and advances one space if they lost and two if they won. Then they ask each other a question based on the keyword in that box. After they've asked and answered their questions they play 'jankan' again. The first to reach GOAL is the winner. I'd say play for 2 to 3 minutes at most.
