I start by asking the kids to name as many Olympic sports as possible, which they do well enough. Then i ask about paralympic sports and the numbers dwindle. I open the power point and explain about "I want to try (olympic sport) and (paralympic sport).
we go through and practise the different names of the sports.
then the game begins, a point game to hype the kids up a bit. can be done in pairs, but boys versus girls works too as they are so competitive. I give them three minutes and explain that the can match one olympic sport and one paralympic sport to get a point, or they can give me three olympic sports and one paralympic sport for 3 times the points. boys and girls come to the front of the class to see the board more clearly, they must say "i want to try === and ===" . As they are shy there is generally one of two kids who can speak a little more english. the other kids see them and will start to line up behind them. i award the points behind the slide or i multiply by 3 depending on the answer. once the timer goes off, i stop and count up the points that have been written on the board.
part two is battleship. using the same sports (olympic and paralympic) the kids must place their ship and ask the question to find their opponents ships.
Do you want to try === and ===?
O yes i do
X no i don`t
this takes time to explain, especially on the first time ever.
ive included the original word doc as well if you want to change and re-upload it later with any changes.
This looks useful and my teaching partners are big on using 'and' so that's great too. A small design suggestion. In the powerpoint game you can use the color option on objects to make the background white transparent. Then you could fit the three sports in the box rather than having overlapping pictures.
