This is kind of like blackjack.
Materials:
Laminated cards (provided)
Magnets
Version 1:
Have kids split into groups. Have them put their heads down and close their eyes. Put the cards up on the board and put price tags under each item randomly.
Next, have them take turns, in groups, and ask "How much is...?". Then pull the card away revealing the price. The goal is for all the groups to go and for the class to stay under ¥1,000. If they go over they bust and the game starts over. The closer they get to ¥1,000, the better.
Version 2:
For this version, you will pass out the ¥1,000 bills. The individuals in each group will say "How much is...?". But for this version you don't pull the cards away until the group says they are done ordering. If they went over ¥1,000, they bust. The group that gets closest to ¥1,000 is the winner.
I've added one price tag of ¥1,001 for fun.
This went over so well with my kids. I only have 5 kids in this class so there were no groups, but they were all so encouraging to each other. I really appreciate how much cooperation this fostered.
(They also enjoyed the individual competition, of course!)
