🌟 Details and Background

This Scene It game has been a massive hit with my students! It’s based on the classic American board game from the ’90s/’00s and has been adapted for the classroom. While it’s designed for elementary schoolers, it also works as a fun time filler for Special Needs Junior High School classes, especially before winter break.

  • 🕒 Duration: Easily fills an entire class period (or more).
  • 🎉 Flexibility: Watch 3-4 clips or go through all 9—it’s up to you!

👥 Age Group

Ideal for elementary school students but adaptable for other groups.

🎯 Goal

Watch Japanese-dubbed or subbed movie clips (1–2 minutes each), answer multiple-choice questions as a team, and win points. The team with the most points at the end wins!

🎒 Materials

  • Whiteboards, markers, and erasers for each team.
  • A blackboard (or another place) for scorekeeping.
  • TV + HDMI + laptop with the PowerPoint game.

🎲 How to Play

1) Divide into teams:

- Split the class into 4–6 teams (max 8).

2) Set up:

- Give each team a whiteboard, marker, and eraser.

- Open the PowerPoint and explain the basics of the game.

3) Pick a clip:

- Go to the “Videos” section of the PowerPoint.

- Teams pick an igloo number to watch a movie clip. Click the igloo to play the video.

4) Answer questions:

- After the clip, click to the Christmas stockings slide. Each stocking represents a question, have a group pick a stocking and click on it to see a question about the clip.
- Teams answer questions by writing on their whiteboards. Countdown, then reveal the correct answer!

5) Score points:

- Teams with the correct answer pick one prize from the next “Prize” slide.

- Click a snowman icon to reveal how many points they’ve won.

- Keep track of scores on the blackboard.

6) Repeat:

- Choose more questions from the Christmas stockings or return to the igloo page to pick a new movie.

🎈 Variations

  • Answer a couple of questions per movie, then move on to a new clip. This way, you can cover more movies in a single class.

📂 Extra Info

  • All videos are available on YouTube.
  • Embedded videos in the PowerPoint ensure the game runs smoothly, even if the internet is down.

Google Drive Download Link: UPDATED Nov 27th,2024
-These are the COMPLETE game files (1.2GB each) with all 9 embeded videos. The differences are a handful of questions, more "Change Points" in JHS, little-to-none Japanese translations on the questions for JHS.

No Google access?
If you don't have access to GoogleDrive at school you can use your ALTopedia subscription account to insert the videos yourself. I've written a brief description on how to do it in a PDF below. Unfortunately ALTopedia has a file size upload limit of 200MB so the completed file cant be uploaded to the site itself.

Happy teaching,

      thank you!

    2. Bonjure289 March 18, 2024

Haha wow, this is insanely difficult, I couldn't answer most of the questions correctly myself haha! But it would be a lot of fun for sure! Thank you so much for making this!

Damn this is high quality. Happy St. Patrick's Day lol... Looking forward to using it next winter!

im so excited to use this for our christmas lesson, but i have a one problem when i click the Q`s socks from the different movie it always go back to the Movie 1 question slide. how can i edit it? Thank you!

    5. CarpenterBee November 27, 2024

@grace21 I just redownloaded and checked! I must have been really tunnel visioned and copy and pasted that one sock. I will fix it now and update the Google link!

    6. CarpenterBee November 27, 2024

Okay the Google Link is now updated! I suggest you delete the old file and replace it with this new one. If you want to fix the socks yourself, you are going to right click the sock > edit link > place in this document > (select slide that has the 5 stockings on it for the correct movie). But then again it would be a lot easier to just delete and download the new file hahaha

Thank you for catching it and I hope you have a good class!

Your activities area always such a hit with my classes- thank you so much for all your hard work! I'm looking forward to using this! =D

    8. ahnnha November 28, 2024

where do you source your movie clips from?
i'd like to add english only videos with no subs.

    9. CarpenterBee November 28, 2024

@ahnnha Awesome! I want to try to get into more English only Scene It games. Usually I just use YouTube to find the clips then download them using 4kvideodownloader. It's a free software.

Subtitles for anyone who wants Subs; If the YT video has subs, you can download them using the 4kvideodownloader software. If you download them, then you will need another software (I use Handbrake) to embedd the subs into the video. If the YouTube video doesn't have English/Japanese subs but you want them, I use Microsoft's free app ClipChamp to write the subtitles myself.

    14. zdahlgren December 11, 2024

This is amazing! This will definitely be one of my favorite Christmas activities!

    15. GabrielleAnn December 12, 2024

I love this so much, thank you for making it. I had my students bring the board up to me in order to play because it takes time to keep points on the board. (I also gave out point cards so they would have to do their own math) They had so much fun and I think they liked the mix of hearing the English versions of some of the movies too!

    16. daviddango December 18, 2024

Thank you so much! This is amazing!
By the way, I might be blind but I couldn't find the Wonka video on the files portion for Altopedia!
Unfortunately, I can't access Google Drive so I'm not sure if you have uploaded it here.

But, always, thank you so much for making the best powerpoint games!

@daviddango just added it. It slipped through the cracks. Enjoy~
