Shiritori Interview

A fun, familiar approach to a new gerunds Interview activity.

  1. Introduce gerunds with the ppt.

  2. Students warm up in pairs with the Rock Paper Scissors activity. If one wins, they move forward and complete the challenge by answering the question using gerunds. [15 min]

  3. Explain the Shiritoi Interview rules with the ppt.

  4. Students take turns to come up with shiritori memo words, with the next word starting with the last letter of the previous word. Students can change the ending of the word to be plural, but it must be a noun and it must follow the chain.

  5. After asking you their gerunds questions, you check their work so they can pass the turn to their partner. You can choose whether both pairs write the same questions or if they do it individually.

  • Target grammar can be adjusted to other lessons. (E.g 1st grade do you / are you, etc)

This looks interesting! But I'm a little confused by the rules. I get that you're playing shiritori just with the nouns, but then the example "Do you enjoy teaching English?" threw me off a little bit, because now you're playing shiritori with either the noun or the gerund. Maybe "Do you enjoy drinking tea?" would be a better example? The rule about using plurals might make it a little more confusing as well, especially for this level of students :( I recommend either allowing them to use the S at the end or omitting anything about it in general. It might be difficult to do this as an activity if they're confused as soon as they begin playing.
