Activity

Let's go to Family Mart!

This activity is heavily inspired by the Welcome to Kirby Cafe by larimarly. I wanted to do a Family Mart shopping version with a money counting jamboard (now using powerpoint instead).

PREP:
You will need to use the Family Mart Practice PPT to practice saying the items and prices. Students should know how to count by one hundreds before doing this activity. I recommend using the 10 steps song from the Let's Try textbooks but change the numbers from counting by 10s to 100s. The students remember the melody very well.

Students will need their Chromebook or tablets.

ACTIVITY:
After the practice PPT split the class into pairs. Each pair should receive a laminated Family Mart menu with the prices. Have the students open the Family Mart money counting PPT. The students will take turns being the customer and the cashier. The person who is the customer will put the items they want in the green basket on the PPT. "I would like OOO, OOO, and OOO, please." The customer can say up to three items. Then they will ask "How much is it?"

The student who is the cashier will use the Family Mart laminated menu to calculate the price. They should use the phrase "OOO yen plus OOO yen plus OOO yen is OOO yen. OOO yen, please. The customer can use the money slide in order to 'pay' for their items. When they are finished they should switch roles.
