Junior High School Shopping Activities

These are the worksheets and presentations I use for shopping lessons

NOTE

I haven't updated or used this activity in awhile. If you are going to use it you should take a good look first for dated cultural references and stuff that doesn't suit the new teacher strategies. If nothing else I hope these older materials will give you some ideas for your own materials.

New Crown 1

Farmers Market Chain Game

In each round students fill in a price on the worksheet. I generally go with $1 or $2 then $1, $2 or $3 dollars and finally $2, $3 or $4 dollars.
Make pairs and take turns being the shopper and the farmer. As a shopper record how much you spent at your partner's shop.
After that make new pairs.

Within the time limit try making four pairs. Once the dialogue has been practiced 4 times sit down.
Total up how much you've spent while shopping. The winners are the students who spent the most.

7 Eleven and Amazon Quiz Games

A price guessing activity using items from the convenience store. I usually have them make groups. I generally reveal one or two of the hidden numbers then have each group think about the answer. One member then comes up with their answer. Once every group has answered we do an answer check using 'How much...?

New Crown 2

It’s too big Worksheet

This is a worksheet with the quiz game pictures. I found in bigger or slower classes the quiz was going too slowly. This way the students can work at their own pace to practice the grammar point.

The Quiz Game

A power point quiz with points boxes. Make groups and practice the grammar. You click on the pictures to see the answer after each group has answered. I usually do this as a speaking only activity so it doesn’t drag on too long. Also its best to cut a few of the questions otherwise it goes too long. It can take the full lesson but I think it’s better to just use half the time.

Shopping Dialogues

Students create shopping dialogues similar to the one in the textbook. Then in pairs come to the teacher and demonstrate their dialogue. I usually reward stickers after completing one or two depending on the time. There is a writing sheet for practicing the quiz game grammar.

New Crown 3

Would You Sign a Message for Me Mingler

The mingler is played in three rounds and can be done in two different ways.

Before each round do some repetition practice and give instructions such as different ways of responding. Also instructions such as make different pairs or boys pair with girls etc.

First round the students make pairs and ask for a signature. 'Would you sign your name for me?' and the response 'Sure'

Once they've collected three names they can sit down. This can be done with both kids getting signs or doing 'Rock, Scissors, paper' and the winner making the request with the loser responding 'sure' and signing the paper.

The second round they request 'Would you draw a .... for me?' Either the teachers decide what to draw or the students can decide.

The third round they request 'Would you write a message for me?' You can put a few message examples on the board. You can let them write messages in Japanese.

Shopping Dialogues

After this I have the students work in pairs or groups to complete the shopping dialogues, practice them and then present them for teachers. Depending on time and the class they can memorize them although most of the time we let them read the dialogues. I reward stickers if they do well.

Price is Right
This is based on an activity from the Englipedia.
I updated it a few years ago but I don't use it these days since I prefer the 7-11 quiz.
If you are going to use it you might want to recheck some of the prices and items.
