Activity

Who/What/When/Where/How

A lesson to review the various 'Wh' words including 'How'.

I typically start with a greeting and warm-up game. Feel free to use your own routine.

Intro slides:
Go through the slides with the class. Each 'Wh' word has an individual slide and two example picture. For the third picture, give the class 1min to talk to their neighbour and come up with a sentence of their own E.g. "Who can play the piano?"

Sentence Drills:
This activity is done in groups. Use the worksheet attached. Each group is given a dice. A word/theme is projected on the screen e.g. youtube, summer vacation etc. Students then roll a dice to decide which 'Wh' word they have to use to make their sentence (6 = free choice). They then fill in the table. Two minutes is usually enough time for each sentence but feel free to adjust for your classes level. Take time to share sentences after each round. There are five themes to complete the table.

Quiz:
If there's time left, each group can then play a basic general knowledge quiz. Each question is phrased as a 'Wh-' questions. Give students 30sec-1min to write their answer inthe box. At the end, check answers and tally up scores.

Feel free to take whatever parts of the lesson you feel could be useful. Make whatever changes you want.

Looks very useful. A suggestion for this activity. Do the quiz in two parts. In one part they answer the 5W questions as you have it and in the other they see the answer and must either make or complete the question. Trying to figure which of the 5Ws to use.

Great suggestion, thanks! I might try and work it in next time I have this lesson. The classes I've had so far have only made it to Q5 before we ran out of time.

This is really well put together! My first years are going to love this for a review on 'Wh' Q's now that it's after summer vacation!

Thanks so much for this. I adapted it slightly e.g. I put in a picture of myself as a child using "who is this girl" which was met with hilarity. The teachers and pupils really enjoyed it. It is ambitious to try to do more than five questions or reverse the order. I suggest if you want to do the suggestion of Robert above then you stick to just this one quiz (depending on level of class of course you may be able to do both!). We asked them to hold up a board with the answer on; one point for right answer, two points for right answer and right spelling.

Beware if you're trying to use this in the unit that contains all the Wh- interrogatives. This powerpoint uses the third person -s and past tense liberally, so it's not appropriate to use until after the following unit.
