Inspired by JoeyJoJo's Christmas Blast Powerpoint Game.
You can make your own game rules depending on the level of your students and how well they work together.
- Split the class into groups. Decide which team goes first. (I usually do janken.)
- The powerpoint has 40 squares. Teams take turns in choosing numbers to answer questions, and get points when they give out correct answers.
- The team with the most points wins.
How the powerpoint works:
- The second slide contains a short discussion about the 5 W's. After discussing it briefly, proceed to the point system. The points are set randomly, so it doesn't matter if the question is hard or easy.
- The fourth slide shows blocks with 1-40. Tell the students that there are plenty of questions so everyone gets a chance to answer at least one time.
- Click on the block to show the question. Once the student has given an answer, click anywhere and it will show the suggested answer/sentence pattern and green Santa Claus button. Click the Santa Claus button to show the points. Then, click the black arrow to go back to the BLOCKS slide.
- The points are pretty straightforward. But if early in the game, someone gets The Grinch, they can only get the points that the other group has earned so far.
When I played this with my 6th graders, I instructed them to stand up if they know the answer instead of having them raise their hand and wait to be called. This made the game more fast-paced. I also emphasized to my students that it is a team game, so they have to help each other and to not let only one student answer every time. It helped that my HRT also encouraged the shy and quiet students by asking their teammates to help them.
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!
Love this. Thanks for sharing.
