- Introduce activity and today's goal
- Ask CCQ questions
- Show a dialogue demonstration with JTE.
- Explain the key phrase to the students (or have the JTE do it)
- Ask students to repeat key sentences after me
- Explain worksheet/activity
LESSON FLOW EXAMPLE
1. JTE introduces activity/theme to the students.
2. Go through new words and text. (Sometimes JTEs will skip this and do it in another lesson)
3. ALT shows PPT, ask CCQs (Concept Checking Questions) throughout the PPT <- Very important!
4. Show and explain dialogue
5. Go through key phrase together
6. Explain how to do the activity
7. Ask students if they have any questions before they start
8. JTE & ALT walks around to assist students
9. OPTIONAL: If time allows it and it looks like everyone has finished, ask for some volunteers to stand up and read the dialogue.
Some JTEs may ask the students to do exercises in their English Time workbooks.
Here’s the list of all the “Let’s Talk” activities that I have done.
❌ = Haven't made one
🟡 = Made one but I'm not satisfied with how it is now due to a number of reasons. I will make a newer version if I'm asked to make a lesson on it again.
✅ = Made one and pretty satisfied with the final version. (I may change some things around in the near future and post an update when I can.)
1st Grade (一年生):
✅ LT1 - Asking Permission, Make Requests
Note: This is a pair activity. Print out the scenario cards, put them in an envelope and a pair gets a random scenario card. They will have to make a dialogue using that scenario. When they're done they practice the dialogue before doing it in front of you. After that, if they have time they can make a manga panel using "Can I~?" or "Can you~?"
✅ LT2 - Explain, Instruct
Note: To play this game, please look at my "English Race - Mario Kart" game (https://altopedia.net/activities/3498-mario-kart-english-race-boardgame)
Download PPT here to go along with the activity: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TA20KF0Uj_mdof2tRyGIJjGQJdOd3CP8?usp=sharing
✅ LT3 - Directions (ask; explain)
Note: Dices are required for this activity. You can use an online dice site instead.
✅ LT4 - Ordering at a Restaurant
Note: Cooking Mama inspired activity. Students get to make their own "lunch tray" with their favourite food items.
2nd Grade (二年生):
✅ LT1 - Make a complaint, apologise
Note: Students roll a dice to choose a scenario. Includes a PPT to explain activity.
✅ LT2 - Asking Permission, Make Requests
Note: To play this game, please look at my "Word Eraser" game (https://altopedia.net/activities/3651-word-e-r-a-s-e-r-sentence-memorising-game)
✅ LT3 - Asking and Giving Directions
Note: Pair activity where students roll a dice to choose a destination. Includes a PPT to explain activity.
✅ LT4 - Shopping
Note: Must use tablets for this activity
✅ LT5 - Exchange during a phone call
Note: N/A
3rd Grade (三年生):
✅ LT1 - First meeting (welcoming someone)
Note: Please look at my word eraser game.
✅ LT2 - Helping Out in Town
Note: Similar to LT1 (1st grade), students get a random scenario and need to make an appropriate dialogue. Printing the manga panel is optional.
❌ LT 3 - Food choices (Agree or Disagree)
Note: Haven't been asked to make one (yet).
TIPS:
- Every 2 or 3 mins, you can make the boys or girls' line move back one seat, that way they have a new partner every time
- Keep an eye out for the quiet students, assist them the best you can
- For the activities where they come up to you or the JTE to practice the dialogue, encourage them to try to do it without looking at their sheet
- To further encourage student engagement, I highly recommend doing this: https://altopedia.net/activities/4460-not-alone-an-idea-to-help-shy-kids-any-grades
NOTE:
- The worksheets might mention places from where I'm from or things about me, so please feel free to change things around to better suit you.

May I request here for JHS 3rd, LT3. Thank you in advance.
@Meenakshi Kumar
Hi there!
Unfortunately I haven't asked been asked to make an activity for that one. I'll submit LT3 if I do get asked.
Thank you very much for all this. It's a staggering amount of work.
I was wondering if you'd posted LT5 for JH2?
@altlessonfinder Hi! Actually, I just finished making the worksheet last week, and I'll be doing the activity today! I just uploaded it now. However, since it is my first time doing the activity, I may make some changes along the way.
To do this activity, you'll have to print the "scenario card" sheets. For my other activities which uses scenario cards, the pair takes 1 random scenario card that I place in an envelope. However, because this activity requires them to make two dialogues (one to accept the invitation and the other to decline it), they'll have to take two scenarios cards.
After doing the demonstration with the JTE, they'll have to work together to make and practice the dialogue. When they feel comfortable (or when time is up), they'll have to come up to you and practice the two dialogues in front of you. If you're running out of time, have half of the class go to the JTE. The students can challenge themselves by not reading the script. Lmk if you have any Qs! Good luck!
Okay, I have done Let's Talk 5 a few times now and found out that it's better to give them only one scenario card. When they come up to you and read the script, that's when you give them the second scenario card (at random) for Scenario No. 2
the Mario Kart activity file has been deleted from the drive :(
@JohnPadua Oh I don't know what happened there... sorry!!
I updated the link now, please try again!
Thanks a lot for all your effort.
LT 3 - Food choices (Agree or Disagree)
kindly help or advise an activity related to page 99 NH3.
@captslim Hi there! Maybe you can split the class into groups. In each group they'll be split into two sides "Domestic" vs "Imported". From there they'll have to make a skip and just fill in the blanks with their reasons as to why _______ is better than domestic/imported goods.
If it's a pair activity, maybe they can make a poster together about the pros and cons of domestic/imported vegetables.
I hope this can give you some ideas on what to do.
@unoplusunoistu Hi, Tu! Just wondering if you have many any worksheets for LT 3 - Food choices (Agree or Disagree)? :)))
@Rachelle03 Unfortunately, I don't. :( You can refer to my previous comment for inspiration!
