This is a dialogue that follows the shopping grammar on page 93 of the New Horizon 2 JHS. It can be used to practice the grammar and used as a guide for a shopping roleplay. There are two worksheets and I will go into detail about both were used.
THINGS YOU'LL NEED:
Clothes cutouts - make these from copy/colored paper in different sizes and add magnets to them so they can be placed on the board. The designs can be whatever you want as long as they come in pairs. That means, two of each - one small, one big (or one blue, one pink). Make enough that each pair in the collecting signatures game gets a set.
I had 9-10 pairs of students so I made 10 sets of clothes plus 10 individual items extra to fill the board.
Clothes Worksheet -
I used this as a small opening activity for the class to go through the different kinds of clothes. There are also a few trivia questions at the end to make things a little more interesting. It takes just 5-10 minutes to complete this activity depending on how fast you go.
I got this worksheet from another one I found on the internet. the direct link to the original work is below.

Shopping Worksheet: Dialogue -
This is not really a worksheet but more of an outline of the dialogue for the students to follow. When you go through the worksheet you will see that there are two versions to the dialogue. One for buying singular things like hat, shirt, scarf, etc. The other in italic and brackets is for buying multiple things (or things that use the phrase "I'm looking for a pair of....") like pants, socks, shoes, sneakers, etc.
There are also letters above the words that can be switched out for other things, hence the Toolbox.
WHAT TO DO:
1. Add the clothes cutouts to the board at the beginning of the class (or before class starts).
2. Hand out the clothes worksheet to the students and go through each item of clothing with them. Then give them time to answer the questions then go through them at the end.
3. Next, hand out the shopping dialogue. Do a demonstration with the JTE using both singular and plural forms of the dialogue.
4. Get students to do the collecting signatures game (directions below).
HOW TO PLAY : Collecting Signatures Game -
- The students will form pairs, turning their desks to face each other to form columns. Give each pair one set of clothing item.
- One side of each column will be the Clerk and the next side will be the Customer.
- The customer side will be the one to get up and move around to collect signatures while the clerk side sits and waits for customers to come and buy something.
- After a pair completes the dialogue, the clerk will sign the back of their dialogue sheet and the customer will move onto another clerk.
- After about 6-10 minutes (or until all customers collect the signatures of all the clerks) switch sides and repeat the process.
NB: The signatures are collected at random so as soon as one student is finished they can move to find another person to ask.
In the last 10-15 minutes of the class use a random wheel picker to pick students by their number to come to the board and act out the dialogue. To make it interesting don't let them use/carry the dialogue sheet with them to the board, so, they'll have to memorize it. Hand out stickers to the pair that completes dialogue. This can be done 2-3 times depending on the amount of time left.
And that's it! I hope this helps :D
