This is a book I created to support student's learning for unit 5 of the Let's try 2 textbook. It took me about 3 weeks to fully complete the book, and yet it's still not perfect haha. So, I apologize for any inconsistencies in the drawings or the story. There are about 8 slides in the power point and each has 2 pages. So in total the book is about 16 pages long. The time it takes for you to read the book depends on the length of discussion students have either during the read aloud, or after you finish reading the book.
I created this book for my 4th grade Elementary students to listen to/read. I read this book to them at the beginning of the unit as a warm-up. With the support of my JET, we asked the students questions at the beginning of the book, as well as after every 2 pages (roughly 1 slide) before turning to the next page. We also asked students to talk with a pair about what what they thought was happening/the meaning of the words being said. The students discussed their ideas in Japanese, despite not being quite familiar with most of the vocabulary yet. They then shared some of their ideas with the rest of the class. If students agreed or had a similar idea, they often said, "Me too!" The pictures, their discussion, and the questions we asked them, helped the students form connections through Japanese with the English words.
Some of the things this book covers are:
-School supplies
-Colors
-Numbers
-Feelings
Some of the questions we asked students were things like:
-What do you think this book is about?
-What does 'school' mean in Japanese?
-What does 'supplies' mean in Japanese?
-Can you name any school supplies in English?
-Who is this character?
-Is he/she_(sad/happy?)__
-What color is this?
-How many _____ does he/she have?
-What color does ___ like?
-What do you think will happen next?
-What will Haru trade next?
-Do you have a __?
-What color is your ____?
After reading the book, we then practiced school supply names. We plan to re-read this book to students at the end of the unit as well. Please feel free to use this resource however you'd like though!
Surprisingly, my kiddos really enjoyed the read aloud, and had a lot of fun guessing what Haru would trade next. Some of them even got a little silly and mentioned they thought he should trade his hair next too haha! I wanted to share a little bit of their happiness with you through this book since I find that quite often when students read something in English, it's mainly to say and repeat rather than to actually think about what's happening. Or the story will be about something very deep and serious in their textbook. I think this read aloud was just a short and good way for students to have fun listening and trying to understand rather than focusing on saying and repeating. I wanted to share this happiness with you all, so even though my book is not perfect, I hope your students can enjoy it too! If you have any feedback, please let me know!
(One last side note: I forgot to name the little girl in pink that appears in the first few pages, so my students decided to name her Sakura. If your kids ask, you can let them know or have them name her too! :D)
This is wonderful! I love the art style as well! I'm definitely using this at the end of the unit. My students love stories, I'm just a horrible story teller :D. This makes it easy for me.
