WHAT'S NEW:
10/10/2023: LW2 - Opinion about an Article:
- Used real news articles on the internet rather than 10 opinion topics this time.
- JTE asked me to make a different version where it's only one article instead of 3 to save time on deciding. (Fukushima Waste Water was the most popular topic.)
26/10/2023: LW1 - Greeting Card:
- Completely changed the WS layout, made the English simpler and easier to understand, and simplified some of the phrases in the Tool Box +
6/11/2023: LW1 - Greeting Card:
- Added one more slide to show the students what other greeting cards they can make.
16/1/2024: LW2 - Postcard:
- Completely changed the worksheets and updated the PPT to explain the worksheet better. You can find the download link for the PPT down below.
POWERPOINT
How I normally structure my PPT:
- Introduce activity and today's goal
- Ask CCQ questions
- Show 2 examples (one easy and one that's challenging for the high level students)
- Explain how the writing structure works (intro, content, conclusion, etc).
- Explain worksheet (with screenshots attached)
WORKSHEETS
What I normally include in my worksheets:
- “Tool Box +”. I often feel that the toolbox provided in the textbook is not enough and sometimes doesn’t have phrases that the students want to use. I try to think of useful phrases and also sentences that students frequently ask me to translate.
- Translations of the examples that I showed earlier in the PPT.
LESSON FLOW EXAMPLE
1. JTE introduces writing task to the students.
2. Go through new words and text. (Sometimes JTEs will skip this and do it in another lesson)
3. ALT shows PPT, ask CCQs (Concept Checking Questions) throughout the PPT <- Very important!
4. Show examples
5. Explain the writing structure (intro, content, conclusion)
6. Explain worksheet
7. Ask students if they have any questions before they start
8. JTE & ALT walks around to assist students
9. OPTIONAL: If time allows it and it looks like everyone has finished, ask for some volunteers to read what they wrote.
Some JTEs may ask the students to do exercises in their English Time workbooks.
Here’s the list of all the “Let’s Write” activities that I have done.
❌ = Haven't made one (yet)
🟡 = Not so satisfied with the current version, may make a new one in the future.
✅ = Pretty satisfied with the current version
1st Grade (一年生):
✅ Let's Write 1 – Greeting Card
Note: N/A
✅ Let's Write 2 – Postcard
Note: The PPT file to explain this activity is quite large. You can download it here:

2nd Grade (二年生):
🟡 Let's Write 1 - Reply to a voice mail
Note: Made this back in 2021 and not really satisfied with the layout and there's also no PPT to explain the worksheet. However, feel free to use it.
✅ Let's Write 2 - Thank you letter for homestay
Note: N/A
3rd Grade (三年生):
✅ Let's Write 1 - Fan Letter
Note: N/A
✅ Let's Write 2 - Opinion about an article
Note: N/A
❌ Let's Write 3 - Using Graphs and Tables
Note: N/A
TIPS:
- I try to avoid the use of deepl and google translate in class as they won’t be able to produce language organically. Encourage them to use their dictionaries and have them raise their hands if they need any assistance.
- Before showing the PPT, ask the students questions to introduce the theme/writing task
(i.e. Today, we’re going to write a fan letter! What’s a fan letter? Have you ever written one? Who are you a big fan of? Today, you get to write a letter to your favourite idol, writer, athlete and so on!)
- I enjoy playing (SFW) music on my portable speaker while they’re writing, you get to see them feel more relaxed. On a plus note, the kids and the teacher get to enjoy listening to some English music! Be careful not to play the music too loud.
- When I was a newbie, I only made the worksheet, explained how to write one and had the students write right away. It didn't go as well as I had planned. The students weren't as motivated and felt clueless. My JTE suggested that I provide some examples first, one using simple English and one with some challenging but useful expressions for those high level students. I realised how much of a difference it made and saw many students produce many great things. Since then, I've been making PPTs to help them better understand on how to do the task.
NOTE:
- I’ve learnt a lot over the past 4 years as an ALT and found out this is the most effective way to run the class, so please bear in mind that every person has their own way of teaching. Though in saying that, I still would like to hear some feedback on my worksheets, PPT, etc. There's always room for improvement.
- The worksheets might mention places from where I'm from or things about me, so please feel free to change things around to better suit you.
These are so incredible
@Isuna Thank you :')
Hello! these are wonderful! You worked hard! Thank you so much! Just one question, I noticed the font you used in the PPT and other worksheet, they look very similar to the font used in the textbook. Did you perhaps pay for these fonts?
@deearr0408 It's because they are! :) I extracted the official fonts from the New Horizon disk.
I uploaded the fonts on my other post.
You can download it from there.
